24.01.2010 - Air Italy (I9/Milan Malpensa) has launched weekly seasonal B767-300ER service from Verona to La Romana and will operate on the route until March 22. It has replaced the B737-500 wet-leased from Bulgaria Air (FB/Sofia) by a B737-300 also operated by its Bulgarian partner. Air Italy has also added a second ex-North American Airlines (NA/New York JFK) B767-300ER and will shortly add two ex-Air One (AP/Rome Fiumicino) B737-400s. 24.01.2010 - British Airways (BA/London Heathrow) and Iberia (IB/Madrid) will merge and operate as separate carriers under a single holding company that will see BA shareholders controlling 55% and Iberia shareholders 45% of the joint company. The transaction is scheduled to be closed in the first quarter of this year and finalized before the end of the year. British Airways has announced plans to lay off up to 1200 employees as part of a restructuring plan with a goal to become profitable again in 2010. BA, Iberia and American Airlines (AA/Dallas/Fort Worth) are still facing hurdles in getting anti-trust immunity for their proposed transatlantic joint venture as part of oneworld alliance and are likely going to be asked to give up at airport slots at key airports in return for getting approval by the European Commission. BA has announced new routes out of London City: London City-Ibiza: 3x weekly ARJ-85/EMB-170 service starting on May 21 (operated by BA Cityflyer (CJ/London City)) London City-Palma de Mallorca: 4x weekly seasonal EMB-170/EMB-190 service starting on May 21 (operated by BA Cityflyer) British Airways will terminate its codeshare agreement with bmi british midland (BD/East Midlands) on March 27. It had agreed to continue to codeshare on former BMed services operated by bmi to the Africa, Central Asia and the Middle East for three years as part of a deal that was concluded when bmi has taken over BMed, at the time a British Airways franchisee, back in 2007. 11.10.2009 - Air France (AF/Paris CDG) is planning to slash up to 1500 jobs as a result of capacity cuts of 5% for passenger and 15% for cargo services. It has given up its routes from London City to Nice and Paris CDG already and will terminate its London City-Strasbourg and Paris CDG-Shannon routes on October 24. It has launched a codeshare agreement with Bangkok Airways (PG/Bangkok Suvarnabhumi) offering its passengers domestic connections within Thailand and to Cambodia and Laos in July. As of September it now also has a bilateral codeshare agreement with Armavia (U8/Yerevan) on the Paris CDG-Yerevan route. Air France-KLM is reportedly interested in taking a minority stake in JAL – Japan Airlines (JL/Tokyo Haneda) together with its alliance partner Delta Air Lines (DL/Atlanta) while the current JAL partner in the United States, American Airlines (AA/Dallas/Fort Worth) has also declared its interest in a similar minority stake. 11.10.2009 - British Airways (BA/London Heathrow) and Iberia (IB/Madrid) have announced that they are now expecting to agree on the proposed merger of the two carriers before the end of the year. BA has launched twice daily A318-100 Business Class only service from London City to New York JFK on September 29. Outbound services stop in Shannon for refueling and US immigration and customs clearance. It has also announced other new services: London Heathrow-Gibraltar: daily A319-100 service starting on October 25 (route transfer from Gatwick) London Heathrow-Pisa: 2x daily A319-100/A320-200 service starting on October 25 (route transfer from Gatwick but daily Gatwick-Pisa service resuming with A319-100s on March 28) It will give up its routes from London Gatwick to Alicante, Barcelona, Ibiza, Krakow, Madrid, Malaga and Palma de Mallorca on October 24 while it will temporarily suspend its London City-Barcelona and London Gatwick-Varna routes for the winter season until March 28 and will not resume its seasonal winter route from London City to Lyon. BA will also temporarily suspend the Singapore-Sydney leg of its daily London Heathrow-Singapore Changi-Sydney service several times for shorter periods during the winter season. It will continue to serve Sydney daily via Bangkok Suvarnabhumi throughout the winter timetable. In other news, it has retired its last B737-300 in mid-June and has readjusted the delivery schedule of its 12 A380-800s on order to start in 2012 with deliveries being delayed by about a year on average. It has also announced plans to cut another 3700 jobs until March 2010 and will retire three B757-200s and three B747-400s next year as part of a planned capacity reduction. British Airways and Qantas (QF/Sydney) have reportedly teamed up with American Airlines (AA/Dallas/Fort Worth) to propose the sale of a minority stake in oneworld partner JAL – Japan Airlines (JL/Tokyo Haneda) to the three carrier consortium. 21.09.2008 - Martinair (MP/Amsterdam) has given up its Amsterdam-Tobago route. It has announced a cooperation agreement with American Airlines (AA/Dallas/Fort Worth) to provide additional connections to US and Caribbean destinations via Miami. |
