24.01.2010 - British Airways (BA/London Heathrow) and Iberia (IB/Madrid) will merge and operate as separate carriers under a single holding company that will see BA shareholders controlling 55% and Iberia shareholders 45% of the joint company. The transaction is scheduled to be closed in the first quarter of this year and finalized before the end of the year. British Airways has announced plans to lay off up to 1200 employees as part of a restructuring plan with a goal to become profitable again in 2010. BA, Iberia and American Airlines (AA/Dallas/Fort Worth) are still facing hurdles in getting anti-trust immunity for their proposed transatlantic joint venture as part of oneworld alliance and are likely going to be asked to give up at airport slots at key airports in return for getting approval by the European Commission. BA has announced new routes out of London City:
London City-Ibiza: 3x weekly ARJ-85/EMB-170 service starting on May 21 (operated by BA Cityflyer (CJ/London City))
London City-Palma de Mallorca: 4x weekly seasonal EMB-170/EMB-190 service starting on May 21 (operated by BA Cityflyer)
British Airways will terminate its codeshare agreement with bmi british midland (BD/East Midlands) on March 27. It had agreed to continue to codeshare on former BMed services operated by bmi to the Africa, Central Asia and the Middle East for three years as part of a deal that was concluded when bmi has taken over BMed, at the time a British Airways franchisee, back in 2007.

24.01.2010 - FlyLAL Charters (LLC/Vilnius) has based a B737-300 in Sharm el Sheikh on behalf of Italian charter broker Aeroservizi. It has added a fifth ex-British Airways (BA/London Heathrow) B737-300. FlyLAL has announced plans to set-up a new charter operator in Poland, FlyLAL Charters PL (Warsaw) that will start operating charter flights with B737s on behalf of Polish tour operators later in 2010.

11.10.2009 - Aeroflot-Nord (5N/Arkhangelsk) had been temporarily forced to suspend its Arkhangelsk-Murmansk-Tromso services in July after the European Union had banned the flights based on a restriction Russian authorities had placed on the carrier that prevented it from operating international charter services. The flights have since resumed on August 1 as scheduled flights were excluded by the restriction in the first place. It has however temporarily stored its single B737-300s and several B737-500s but plans to lease another ex-British Airways (BA/London Heathrow) B737-300.

11.10.2009 - Astraeus (5W/London Gatwick) will lease two ex-Clickair A320-200s and a second ex-British Airways (BA/London Heathrow) B737-500. It has already added a fifth ex-Zoom Airlines B757-200 that it currently operates on behalf of Monarch Airlines (ZB/London Luton).

11.10.2009 - bmi british midland (BD/East Midlands) has been and still is the topic of a lot of speculation this year with British Airways (BA/London Heathrow), Etihad Airways (EY/Abu Dhabi Intl), Flybe. (BE/Exeter) and Virgin Atlantic (VS/London Heathrow) all more or less openly declaring their interest in taking over the carrier should Lufthansa (LH/Frankfurt Intl) choose to sell. bmi has started codesharing on the SriLankan Airlines (UL/ Colombo Bandaranaike Intl) route from London Heathrow via Male to Colombo and has also filed for DOT approval to start a bilateral codeshare agreement with new Star Alliance partner Continental Airlines (CO/Houston Intcl). It has however terminated a similar codeshare agreement with Air Canada (AC/Montreal Trudeau) for services between the UK and Canada. bmi has given up its regional routes from East Midlands to Cologne/Bonn on September 18 and from Manchester to Glasgow Intl on September 19 and will give up its London Heathrow-Palma de Mallorca route on November 4 and its London Heathrow-Venice Marco Polo services on November 16.
