05MAY2013: Lufthansa, SAS announce breakup after 18 years together
Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt International (FRA)) and SAS Scandinavian Airlines (SK, Copenhagen Kastrup (CPH)) have agreed to discontinue their joint venture on traffic between Germany and Scandinavia due to changing market conditions, ending a near 20 year long partnership. In a communique, SAS stated that the agreement, which started in 1995, was "no longer compatible with their commercial interests as Lufthansa has transferred its European traffic outside of Frankfurt International (FRA) and Munich Franz Josef Strauss International (MUC) to its subsidiary, germanwings (4U, Cologne/Bonn Konrad Adenauer (CGN))." As Star Alliance members, however, the companies will still continue to offer code shares on each other's flights.

12APR2013: germanwings ahead of schedule with Lufhansa route transfer plans
germanwings (4U, Cologne/Bonn Konrad Adenauer (CGN)) is pushing ahead with plans for the re-branding and repainting of its thirty-five-strong fleet of A319-100s into the carrier's new livery. The refurbishment, which will also include newly fitted aircraft interiors, is due to be completed by the time the “new germanwings” takes to the skies on July 1. Route-wise, as part of its plans to transfer all domestic and European point-to-point services outside of its hubs at Frankfurt International (FRA) and Munich Franz Josef Strauss International (MUC) to germanwings, Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt International (FRA)) transferred its Vienna International (VIE), Palma de Mallorca Son Sant Joan (PMI), Stuttgart Echterdingen (STR) and Nuremberg (NUE) flights routed to and from Hamburg Fuhlsbüttel (HAM) to germanwings on March 31, mirroring a similar move made for Stuttgart-bound flights last year. All Hamburg flights are scheduled to be moved to germanwings by April 26. A similar take over for Cologne/Bonn Konrad Adenauer (CGN) flights is planned for June 1 already. The transfer of Berlin routes commences on October 27 and is slated to be completed by March 30 2014. Thereafter, Dusseldorf International (DUS) will see its transfer begin at the end of March 2014 and will last until December 1, 2014 except for long-haul routes which will still be operated by Lufthansa.

03FEB2013: BA and Iberia to outsource short-haul flying to Vueling?
British Airways (BA, London Heathrow (LHR)) and sister carrier Iberia (IB, Madrid Barajas (MAD)) are reportedly considering to move some of their short-haul flights to low-cost carrier Vueling Airlines (VY, Barcelona El Prat International (BCN)) according to a report by the Financial Times. If International Airlines Group is able to fully acquire Vueling, according to the report, short-haul point to point services such as BA's network from London Gatwick (LGW) and some Iberia routes could be transferred to lower cost Vueling in a similar move to Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt International (FRA))'s plan to move non-hub routes to low-cost carrier subsidiary germanwings (4U, Cologne/Bonn Konrad Adenauer (CGN)).

13JAN2013: SkyWork to switch to Berlin Tegel from March 31
SkyWork Airlines (SX, Berne (BRN)) has announced plans to move its twice daily Do328-100 service from Berne to Berlin from Berlin Schönefeld (SXF) to Berlin Tegel (TXL) from March 31. It joins Croatia Airlines (OU, Zagreb Pleso (ZAG)) and germanwings (4U, Cologne/Bonn Konrad Adenauer (CGN)) as the third carrier deciding to move to Tegel due to the on-going delays to the opening date of the new Berlin Brandenburg International (BER) airport built at Schönefeld.
