18NOV2012: TNT Airways and Pan Air to be sold to ASL Aviation Group
TNT Airways (3V, Liège Bierset (LGG)) and its sister carrier Pan Air (PV, Madrid Barajas (MAD)) will be sold to Dublin based ASL Aviation Group as part of the proposed acquisition of logistics provider TNT Express by UPS (United Parcel Service). The European Commission had asked for the two TNT Express owned cargo carriers to be sold as part of the conditions required to approve the proposed deal given UPS already fully owns in-house cargo carrier UPS Airlines (5X, Louisville Standiford International (SDF)). ASL currently already owns Air Contractors (AG, Dublin International (DUB)), Europe Airpost (5O, Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG)) and Safair (FA, Johannesburg Oliver Reginald Tambo International (JNB)) and is expected to continue to operate cargo services on behalf of UPS if the plan goes ahead. Pan Air currently operates six Bae 146-200(QT)s and two Bae 146-300(QT)s while TNT Airways operates two Bae 146-200(QT)s, five Bae 146-300(QT)s, four B737-300(F)s, nine B737-400(F)s, four B747-400(F)s and three B777-Fs on behalf of TNT Express, mainly from its hub at Liège Bierset (LGG). Two of the four B747-400ERF freighters are currently wet-leased to Emirates (EK, Dubai International (DXB)) operating for Emirates SkyCargo from Dubai International (DXB). TNT Airways also operates a single B757-200(F) on behalf of NATO (Geilenkirchen (GKE)).

TNT Airways (3V, Liège Bierset (LGG)) will operate its first ex-Air Finland (OF, Helsinki Vantaa (HEL)) B757-200(F) on behalf of NATO (Geilenkirchen (GKE)) in a combi configuration with a passenger and cargo section on the aircraft. Its parent TNT Express has finally accepted an increased cash offer of 6.85 billion USD and will be acquired by UPS (United Parcel Service). It is obviously yet unclear what impact that will have on TNT Airways and its partner carriers across Europe as UPS and TNT operate competing European hubs at Cologne/Bonn Konrad Adenauer (CGN) and Liège Bierset (LGG).
