Finnair (AY, Helsinki Vantaa) is planning to hire 200 cabin crew from a temporary work agency in Spain as a means of replacing company staff in "special situations", CEO Pekka Vauramo, has stated. With a collective bargaining agreement with Finnair cabin crew due to come to an end in October, pundits in the aviation field have read this as the Finnish carrier moving to negate fallout from any strikes by local Finnish cabin crew in the future. Characteristically, the unions themselves are up in arms against the development calling it "underhanded" and "demoralizing" ahead of fresh collective-bargaining negotiations due before year year-end. The move mimics that of neighbour Norwegian Long Haul (Oslo Gardermoen) which registered its longhaul B787-8 fleet in Ireland in order to circumvent Norwegian laws barring the carrier from hiring cheaper Asian cabin crews.
