Alitalia (AZA, Rome Fiumicino) has rejected an offer from Ryanair (FR, Dublin International) to provide a feeder service for the struggling Italian national carrier via its soon-to-be-established Rome Fiumicino hub. The Irish LCC had offered feeder flights that would fit into the Alitalia (AZA, Rome Fiumicino) international network to and from Rome Fiumicino. "We hope Alitalia will take up our offer to co-operate with them, as we believe Ryanair’s new low fare domestic flights to Fiumicino can significantly assist Alitalia through the restructuring which is necessary to restore its profitability and secure the future of as many of Alitalia’s employees as possible. Ryanair believes that by offering to feed Alitalia’s international hub at Fiumicino and by searching for opportunities to work with and assist Alitalia in its turnaround, that we can help the new investors and the management of Alitalia to return that airline to profitability and viability," said Ryanair's Michael Cawley. According to ANSA newswire however, Alitalia responded to the offer stating it has its own business strategies to pursue. "Alitalia thanks Ryanair for its proposal for a collaboration...but remember that (Alitalia) has its own strategy, business plan, fleet and crews."
