Garuda Indonesia (GA, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) expects to place an order with either Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) or Boeing (BOE, Washington National) for either the A380-800 or B747-8 by year’s end. The aircraft will primarily be used to ferry Muslims from Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta to Saudi Arabia during the Hajj and Umrah religious pilgrimages. According to the Australian Business Traveller journal, Garuda is looking at ‘convertible’ versions of the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8I which could be transformed into all-economy aircraft during off-peak travel seasons. All business class seats would be temporarily removed and replaced with economy seats, for a maximum capacity as high as 850 seats in the A380. CEO Emirsyah Satar expects the converted aircraft would then “fly to the Middle East and also the growing market in China and Japan.”
