JetBlue Airways (B6, New York JFK) CEO Dave Barger says AMR Corporation, the parent of American Airlines (AA, Dallas/Fort Worth), should relinquish all its slots at Washington National should a proposed merger with US Airways (Phoenix Sky Harbor) go through. According to Bloomberg Business, Mr Barger believes that US Airways' 55% market share on flights out of Washington National is "sufficient" and that no carrier should be allowed to exceed that. The airlines are locked in a court battle with the US Department of Justice over their proposed tie-up in which the DoJ asserts that a merged US/AA airline would be anti-competitive given that it would control 69% of traffic at Washington National. US/AA state that their merger would not affect travellers as they would also have the choice of using Washington Dulles.
